9th Eurpean Opera-directing Prize 2016

 

Italian Director Andrea Bernard from Bolzano won the 9th European Opera Prize 2016 in Berlin. The 29-year-old Andrea Bernhard convinced the jury with an original concept for the opera "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi.

“The decisive factor was that he was able to plausibly convey his special point of view on the title figure Violetta to the singers' representatives and to implement in the rehearsals", explained chairman of the jury, Graham Vick, artistic director of the Opera Birmingham Company.

Andrea Bernhard, his outfitter Alberto Beltrame and costume designer Elena Beccaro will present their concept in 2017 at the renowned Verdi festival in Parma. For this purpose, the team is awarded a 20,000 Euro direction grant.

 

No second prize was awarded. However, the jury awarded two third prizes to Director Max Hoehn from Great Britain and Italian Director Martin Verdross. The third prize is connected to a guest assistant director engagement at a large opera house and a fee of 5,000 Euros.

The competition took place during the autumn conference of Opera Europa at the Komische Oper and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. It is organized every two years by the Wiesbaden association Camerata Nuova in cooperation with the Opera Europa, a group of more than 160 opera houses and cultural institutions worldwide.

185 young artists from 21 nations worldwide had applied for the 9th European Opera Prize, and submitted their directing and outfit concepts for the opera "La Traviata". Five teams from Italy, France and Great Britain had been selected for the final.

 

In the finals, the participants had to develop the scene of the second act between title figure Violetta and father Germont with two experienced singers in front of a prominent jury of intendands.

The 9th European Opera Directing Prize is under the patronage of the Director of the Hessian State Chancellery Axel Wintermeyer.
